Allegan County Tobacco Reduction Coalition (ACTRC)
A key element of the Comprehensive Tobacco-Free Schools Program is the revival of the Allegan County Tobacco Reduction Coalition (ACTRC) for work on the initiative. The coalition’s overall mission is to initiate and support tobacco reduction programs and activities in Allegan County.
Currently, the coalition is seeking new members and volunteers to participate in community tobacco scans for the Comprehensive Tobacco-Free School Program. The scans will involve volunteers visiting local tobacco retailers (grocery and convenience stores, gas stations, etc.) and noting the type of tobacco and non-tobacco nicotine products being sold, and how they are advertised. The concern is the enticing and harmful nature of newly emerging tobacco and non-tobacco nicotine products which are marketed toward youth and sold near schools. Another way that volunteer coalition members can contribute to the initiative is by engaging in communication with Allegan County school board members to promote the adoption of a comprehensive 24/7 tobacco-free schools policy.
